We have a chat to DAVID WENHAM
David, why did you decide to become an ambassador to the Wayside Chapel?
I live in the area and have known about the Wayside Chapel for many years; it's one of those places everyone's heard about. In fact, I used to come here when Darlinghurst Theatre Company started in the theatre out the back. I like what the Wayside Chapel does and how they do it. Their reputation is a bit eccentric and 'out there', which means they tend to take things as they come rather than be too prescriptive. My impression is that they are family to many people who don't really have that. I think the Wayside Chapel fulfills a very important role in Sydney so I was very pleased to be asked to be an ambassador. I also take inspiration from my dad who was a long time volunteer with our local St Vincent de Paul.

What does being an ambassador involve?
The people at the Wayside Chapel wanted someone with a genuine involvement in the place, and not just a name on a website. (I gather there are only two other ambassadors and both support the Wayside Chapel in ways that are relevant to what they do - one advertising and the other classical music). While the people at Wayside understand that my job can take me out of the picture for several months at a time, when I am around I meet with them to talk about how things are going and what I can do to help. I've been able to put them in touch with some of my friends and contacts - artists, fashion and film people - who help with events and donations of stuff that help the Wayside Chapel raise money. I occasionally act as a spokesperson for them and I make a point of dropping in and showing my face and getting to know staff, volunteers and visitors.
