The Wayside Chapel, a place of many tears, struggles and victories

At The Wayside Chapel we provide non-judgmental support for all people in our community; young people, the homeless, the elderly, victims of domestic violence, abuse and substance addictions and people with mental health issues.

We place a great deal of emphasis on self help recovery and we provide support through an often difficult journey. Much of this is achieved through working with a number of other organisations, such as St Vincent's Mental Health/Caritas, Kings Cross Youth at Risk, Mission Beat, Matthew Talbot, Lou's Place, St John's/Rough Edges, The Crossing, St Canice's, Kirketon Road, the City of Sydney, the Department of Health, and the Department of Health and Ageing.

Our programs include:
  • Community Services Centre. A drop-in and crisis referral centre, operating seven days a week. The crisis centre provides a non judgemental environment in which those living on the fringes of society are able to socialise, contribute, participate and gain support. This support includes access to those things necessary to maintain a basic standard of living; bathroom and shower facilities, clean clothing and nutritious meals. The crisis centre provides on site access to primary health care, counselling, and addiction/ recovery support through a range of clinics and groups. Furthermore, it provides information, referrals and advocacy to people to assist in the areas of homelessness, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, accommodation and health care.

  • Wayside Youth. Provides outreach support, street walks and a youth space to young people under the age of twenty five who are living on or about the streets of the Kings Cross area. Street walks allow youth workers to build and maintain relationships with young people and early intervention with young people new to the area. Outreach services are provided in a variety of locations and include court support, attendance at juvenile police interviews and hospital visits. The Wayside Chapel is the only drug and alcohol free safe space for young people in the Kings Cross area. More like a home than a drop in centre, it provides a breakfast program, music lessons, a discussion group, regular outings, Saturday night dinner and chill out space.

  • Beatniks & Bohemians Op Shop The best kept secret in town. Not only do we run a store cupboard of emergency clothes for those in need but our Op Shop is also a destination for fashion hounds seeking a designer bargain. Open 9.00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am to 2.00pm every Saturday.

  • Nomad Cafe' and Drop-in Centre. Our wonderful Cafe' and drop-in centre is open seven days a week. Thanks to the generous donations of various delis and bakeries around Sydney, the Cafe' offers meals which, in the spirit of self-help, are not free but extremely affordable. It's a great place to chat and catch up on some TV viewing. (And we greatly appreciate the offer of home cooked food too).

  • Activities Programs. Literacy/numeracy, social skills, film club, art class, computer skills, job club, theatre etc.
  • Day to Day Living Program. A new service offered by Wayside to support people with severe and persistent mental health issues to participate in social, recreational and educational activities with the aim of improved quality of life and increased independence in the community. This is a referral service, for details email: wendy.suma@thewaysidechapel.com

  • Outreach Home Visiting and Seniors Social Events. We visit shut-ins at home or in nursing homes and hospitals to provide companionship and sometimes do small errands. We also provide weekly outings and Bingo and other social events at our premises.
