‘Wayside Lives it Now’ Youth Week

To coincide with National Youth Week, the Wayside Youth team held an event on April 14; and what a day it turned out to be. The aim was to create an environment that was fun, informative and inclusive; let’s just say that the aim was achieved.

The public was invited into the youth space, where amongst other things, they were encouraged to write on the youth space walls, decorate a cup cake and listen to (and play) music. The vibe created was magnetic; definitely an event to be remembered.

For helping to make the day such a success, Wayside Youth would like to thank:

  • Sue, Olga, Trevor & Leslie ( tireless volunteers)
  • Ashleigh & Claire (students on placement)
  • Carole Johnston (donor of 3 brand new guitars on the day)
  • and all our visitors, young and old

Wayside Christmas Day Street Party - Dec 25

The Wayside Chapel once again hosted a massive Christmas Day Street Party on December 25, with an open invitation for all in the community to attend.

Donations of food including 50 legs of ham, 1200 individually wrapped Christmas cakes, 60 kgs of salad and 70kgs of prawns ensured that guests enjoyed a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings - served by 200 volunteers.

Each guest was given a gift by santa and his elves, and even Batman made an appearance and sang a couple of tunes.

Pastor of The Wayside Chapel, Rev Graham Long said though that the real reason for the event was about overcoming loneliness and bringing people together.

“It’s a great day, when people of all traditions, and at all ends of the social strata, sit together for good fellowship, food and fun.

“Since its humble beginnings as a BBQ in the back lane, the aim of the event has been simple - to create some fun and a sense of community so that the empty ache of loneliness has not much opportunity to do its work.

We were blown away again this year by the goodness of people and encouraged to participate in the joy that is unleashed when so many people join together in an act of service of others." said Rev Long
